How to clean couch stains.

The most important thing is that you read the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Couches always have a cleaning label.

Here are some codes you are likely to find and what they mean:

W - This material can be cleaned with water.

S - Do not use water to clean this material. Use a solvent-based cleaner.

WS - This material can be cleaned with water or a solvent-based cleaner.

X - Vacuum this material only.

The following tips should be sufficient for cleaning each type of fabric. However, be sure to check the cleaning label and test the products on an inconspicuous area before using them all over the couch.

How to clean a fabric couch

Prepare the couch by brushing it with a clean white towel or stiff brush. Sprinkle the entire couch with baking soda and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. (You can leave it on for up to an hour, too.) Vacuum the couch with a brush attachment to remove the baking soda.

Prepare this simple cleaner to remove any remaining stains. Mix 1 teaspoon of dish soap, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, and 1 cup of warm water in a small spray bottle. Then add 1 teaspoon of baking soda and quickly screw the lid onto the spray bottle.

Spray the cleaning solution on a white cloth and gently blot and rub the stains on the fabric. Alternatively, you can wipe the entire couch with the solution for a thorough clean. Let the fabric dry.

How to clean a microfiber couch

Rubbing alcohol is your friend when you want to clean most microfiber couches. The cleaning code S (for "solvent") means that rubbing alcohol is a good choice.

Spray an area with rubbing alcohol in sections, then scrub with a white or light-colored sponge (so that no paint gets onto the couch when you scrub). You will see the stains peel off on the sponge.

The couch should dry quickly as the alcohol evaporates quickly. Once dry, use a dry scrubbing brush to brush the couch in circular motions to loosen up the fabric.

If there are water stains on the couch (and your couch can be cleaned with both water and solvents), do the same with distilled water. Spray, scrub, and brush after the fabric dries.

How to clean a leather couch

There are a number of cleaning options for leather sofas, as leather is available in different versions. When cleaning a leather couch, keep in mind that the methods can vary widely from couch to couch. These cleaning instructions are specifically intended for cleaning protected leather, which is the most common and easier to clean than other types of leather. If you have an unprotected leather couch, you should follow the manufacturer's cleaning recommendations. Be sure to check the cleaning label and first test the cleaning agent on an inconspicuous place on the couch.

Start by vacuuming the couch, including the nooks and crannies.

Wipe the entire couch with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.

Make a cleaning solution by mixing equal parts water and white vinegar in a small bucket. Dip a microfiber cloth in the solution so it's damp but not wet. Wipe the couch and rinse the cloth regularly.

Dry the couch with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.

Use a leather conditioner on your couch every six to 12 months to keep the leather soft to the touch.
