How to clean a dishwasher.

An open dishwasher with lots of clean dish in it.

Cleaning a dishwasher is really simple. Every six months, this often-overlooked appliance should be cleaned.

Get yourself a dishwasher cleaner and put it in the dish rack. Do not use any soap or dishwasher detergent when using dishwasher cleaner. Run the dishwasher on the hottest setting and wait till it completes. You will get rid of bad smells, limescale and anything not wanted.

If you would like more of a homemade method, proceed like this:

Simply fill a coffee cup with vinegar or baking soda or one of both in the upper slot and let the dishwasher run in the normal program without any other dishes in the appliance. Your dishwasher will be back to normal.

Calcium-like limescale deposits

In the case of lime-like deposits from hard water, use soda powder instead of dishwashing detergent and run an empty load in the normal program. The citric acid works what a week of scrubbing cannot.

Bad smells

If your clean dishes smell like onions, use a normal amount of your normal dish detergent, put two cups of vinegar in the bottom of the appliance and run it on the normal program.
